Yala National Park is located on the southern tip of Sri Lanka, on the border of the Southern and Uva provinces, and is the world's largest tropical rainforest. It has a land area of 377.9 square kilometers (about 377.9 square miles) (978.8 sq km).

There are a variety of ecosystems in the national park, including monsoon forests, dry monsoon forests, thorn woods, marine and freshwater wetlands, grasslands and marshes, and sandy beaches along the coast.

Yala is primarily composed of metamorphic rock, with reddish-brown and grey soil covering the majority of the land surface in the area.

The park is located in a semi-arid, dry climate, with the majority of the rain falling during the northeast monsoon season (June to August).

In the region, there are 215 different bird species that call it home, and it is one of 70 locations in Sri Lanka that are designated as important bird sanctuaries by the government. There are 44 different species of mammals, with the elephant, water buffalo, sloth bear, and leopard being among the most well-known of them. Yala National Park is home to one of the world's densest leopard populations, which can be found nowhere else on the planet.
