Arugam Bay

Towards the southern end of the east coast, the settlement of Arugam Bay is a favorite destination with travel enthusiasts drawn by the charms of its gorgeous, palm-fringed beach. Surfers originally placed the hamlet on the map by arriving to surf what are commonly believed to be some of the best waves in Sri Lanka. The beach continues to attract plenty of surfers, but its laid-back feel and unusual charm give wide-ranging appeal.

The local population have vehemently and successfully rejected the establishment of major hotels. Plenty of casual rooms are available in unique village guesthouses and comfortable beachfront bungalows and cabanas. Tours of adjacent Pottuvil Lagoon are easily arranged, as well as motor-boat journeys out to sea in search of dolphins.
