The ancient city of Polonnaruwa was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 and is the first cultural site in Sri Lanka to be included on this list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites. It is the administrative center of the district of the same name, which is located in Sri Lanka's North Central Province. It is the largest town in the area. It is the country's second-oldest kingdom and the second-oldest in the world.

The historic city, which is protected by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), is roughly 122 hectares in size. Sri Lanka's earliest metropolis, this magnificent medieval capital, was founded in the 11th century AD and serves as the country's administrative center. There have been three Kings who have ruled this ancient city during the course of its existence, spanning three periods in its history. Even though it reached its zenith of prosperity in the 12th century, it was eventually destroyed by invaders in the following centuries. Although the city has been destroyed, the remnants of its former magnificence and splendor have been left behind. These ruins are what has been designated as a World Heritage Site by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).
