The city of Anuradhapura is another significant city in the country that is well-known for its historical and cultural importance. These are the provincial and national capitals of the North Central Province, as well as one of the country's ancient capitals. Ancient Sri Lankan ruins, which are well-preserved in the city, have made it a popular tourist destination.

It was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1982 because it served as the spiritual heartland of Theravada Buddhism for hundreds of years prior. This is what distinguishes it as sacred in the Buddhist community. In addition to that, it is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, and not simply one of the oldest in Sri Lanka.
