Seasons affect the waves in Sri Lanka. There are two seasons in Sri Lanka: a rainy (or "monsoon" season) and a dry (or "dry" season). Fortunately for the island's surfers, each season brings with it a new spot to hit the waves. Because the island has a surface size of 25,332 square miles, the west and east coasts experience opposite weather patterns. There will always be waves in Sri Lanka, no matter what time of year you go.

From November to March, the southwest coast of Sri Lanka has the best waves for surfing. Surfing hotspots abound along the West Coast, from tourist communities to little fishing settlements. The southwest coast of Sri Lanka has waves for all levels of surfers, from the most experienced to the most inexperienced. Hikkaduwa, Unawatuna, or Midigama are the best places for experienced shredders to locate peeling point breaks and fast-breaking reef breaks. Weligama's beach break is a great place to learn to surf for the first time! While each of these locales is unique, they all boast warm, tropical blue sea, fantastic surf, and unparalleled street food scenes.

Surfing the southeast coast of Sri Lanka is the best bet if you're planning a trip between May and December. The best waves in Sri Lanka may be found in and around Arugam Bay and the surrounding area. Long, fun point breaks and world-class, top-to-bottom reef breaks may be found here. Not to worry, the east coast of Sri Lanka still has some great spots for newbie surfers.
